From Cam Hutchinson of the Saskatoon Express, “Anyone who thinks football is a team game hasn’t watched the Green Bay Packers play without Aaron Rodgers.”

Football fans, substitute any of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL especially the Broncos and Peyton Manning, the Patriots and Tom Brady and the Saints and Drew Brees.

Baseball teams can lose any of their top players and still win. Basketball is almost the same because most teams don’t have Lebron James, but football teams are very often overly dependent on their premier quarterback. It’s not only the quarterback’s talent but also the fact that they have a working relationship with their receivers, running backs and line. The abovementioned quarterbacks and their receivers simultaneously see a defense, read it the same so they can make instant and similar adjustments. This is experience, practice and skill.

If you’ve read my newsletters and articles or heard me speak on what business buyers are looking for and what owners should do to prepare their company for sale you know that I preach that one of the top three things an owner should do is remove dependencies, especially any dependency on the owner.

What happens to the business if it’s dependent on the owner and owner has an illness or injury? They go into a tailspin like football teams dependent on a premier quarterback (or even just a good quarterback).

It’s a lot easier for a business owner to fix this problem than it is for an NFL team to succeed without a great quarterback. And, you can plan and prepare to eliminate the dependency.
