Let’s assume you make a product that uses consumables. One of your goals should be to get so popular that Costco comes out with their Kirkland house brand for your product.

This struck me recently when I saw Kirkland brand K-cup coffee pods. It didn’t take long for the shelves at Costco to be filled with numerous brands of K-cups (Starbucks, Tullys, Newman’s Own, San Francisco, etc.) and now Kirkland.

What an indicator that your product is extremely popular, in this case for the K-cup machine.

Now getting Costco to create a house brand for you doesn’t apply to every business and that’s okay. But we all have some kind of indicator that lets us know we’ve moved into the realm of mass acceptance, whether it’s by consumers or in our niche.
