My business owner group met recently and one of the topics we discussed was referrals. I thought you’d be interested in the highlights of that discussion. First, their top referral sources are:

  • Customers
  • People with whom you have experience or relationship
  • Influencers
  • Vendors
  • Anybody with whom you have a good reputation

The listed reasons on why someone makes a referral are:

  • You do great work
  • You have a respected culture of providing great service
  • Communicating value to others (and I’ll add that this means communicating it often)
  • Saying thank you whether by phone, in writing or with a gift
  • “Atta boy” exposure, it builds the referrers brand when they recommend the right person or company
  • You offer a loyalty program (great for retail)
  • Above all, you will get more referrals when you ask!
